How to Properly Store Winter Clothes

Summer is fast approaching! This means that our cozy winter sweaters, scarves, hats and gloves finally can finally be given a well-deserved break for the summer.
So that you can fully enjoy them again in the autumn and winter, it’s important to keep a few things in mind when storing clothes for the season.
Summer Break for Winter Items
The first important step is to thoroughly clean the garments. This prevents dirt and odors from settling into your beloved winter clothes during the summer. In our series on the proper care and cleaning of your garments, we’ve already covered in detail how to care for wool, as well as for clothing made of silk and other natural fibers.
Be sure to empty all pockets. This is not only important before every wash, but also in the worst case, leaving things in your pockets may cause damage during storage. Ugly marks or even discoloration are possible—and you really don’t want any unfortunate surprises in the autumn!
A Place to Stay Awhile
The ideal place to store your winter clothes is clean and dry. Darkness will protect the material from fading. In addition, if the location is cool, it helps to keep moths away.
It’s important not to seal your winter clothes in plastic bags. Bags can trap residual moisture and prevent textiles from receiving proper ventilation. This can easily create mold and unpleasant odors.
The ideal choice for storage is a wardrobe with enough space so that clothes can lie flat or hang. Pants and skirts are best stored on a hanger. Sweaters can be folded—knitted garments and clothing made of cashmere or silk should definitely be stored lying flat to help maintain the original shape.
Moths Also Love Cashmere and Silk
Moths also appreciate quality: wool and silk are particularly vulnerable to being eaten by moths. Therefore, wool sweaters and silk blouses should be wrapped in a protective layer of tissue paper. Linen cloths can also protect clothing from gathering dust during the summer months.
To keep moths away, in the wardrobe you can hang a piece of wood scented with cedar oil. The smell of lavender is also effective against moths. Placing small lavender sachets with the clothing can provide additional protection.
Now you once again have room in your closet for delicate summer blouses, airy tops and wonderful summer dresses. Still need the perfect outfit for your next summer vacation? Then take a look at our REPEAT Summer Collection.
